SILICONE KEYPAD PARTNER
Overview of Laser Keyboards
Laser Keyboards, also known as Laser Keypads, are designed with a surface coated in colorful ink via spraying or screen printing. The legends or backgrounds are then precisely formed through laser cutting, allowing for LED backlighting. This process ensures that the desired characters, patterns, or background colors are accurately rendered.
Surface Coating and Design
Initial Coating: The first layer of sprayed ink determines the character, pattern, or top surface background color.
Secondary Coating: Typically, a black or gray ink is used in the second layer for optimal light absorption.
Final Coating: The last layer sets the keypad’s surface color. Common choices for the laser keypad cover include PU coating, epoxy coating, matte smooth finish, or transparent plastic keycaps.
Key Features and Considerations
Coating Precision: The thickness of the sprayed color coating is critical. Too thin a coating can lead to light leakage, while too thick a coating can affect the tactile feel of the buttons.
Actuation Force: Silicone laser keypads generally require a high actuation force, ranging from 150 to 300 grams, with a tolerance of +/- 50 grams. For lower actuation force or smaller tolerance requirements, incorporating metal domes as keypad contacts is recommended.
Laser Engraving Process
Once the color ink is dry, symbols or graphics are engraved on the button surface using a laser. This process removes the top layer of ink to reveal the underlying color, forming the desired symbols or text.
Addressing Light Interference
Different colored LEDs can be installed beneath the silicone buttons to provide backlighting. However, because the silicone button base is translucent, adjacent button lights may interfere with each other. To prevent this, black insert walls can be used to block the light from neighboring buttons, ensuring clarity and precision in the backlighting.
