Overview:
A metal dome, also known as a stainless steel dome or tactile metal dome, is an important part of the switch. It is made of stainless steel and takes advantage of the inherent conductivity of metal. Positioned on a silicone membrane keypad, the metal dome is strategically placed over the conductive area of the circuit board, usually over the gold finger on the circuit board. When activated, the center of the metal dome sinks down and connects to the PCB’s traces, creating a circuit. This allows the membrane keypad to function smoothly and ensures reliable operation when current passes through.
Some silicone keypads incorporate metal dome arrays for actuation and electrical function. These arrays feature metal domes on a PET sheet with adhesive backing, offering a unique actuation feel. Metal domes provide shorter stroke and longer lifespan compared to traditional silicone keypads with carbon pills or conductive printing.
